Khmer Drunk Hit Mother and Two Children
(NECN: Josh Brogadir, Lowell, Mass.) - A serious accident in Lowell, Mass. has has sent a mother and two small children to the hospital. Lowell police say the woman was pushing the children in a stroller when they were struck by a car. The accident happened at the intersection of Broadway and Fletcher. A four year old boy is in critical condition with head and internal injuries, the driver under arrest, suspected of being drunk. A shattered windshield, next to an overturned stroller. Spilled milk and soda cans strewn about Fletcher Street in Lowell, Massachusetts A mother and her two young children struck as they crossed the street from the supermarket by what police say was a drunk driver. "The driver was on Fletcher Street. He stopped at a red light. The light turns green, he starts across the intersection. He strikes the stroller as the mother was crossing the street. On the opposite side of the intersection on Broadway Street, stopped at that light is a marked police cruiser and two officers in it who witnessed the whole incident," said Lowell Police Lt. Tim Crowley. It happened at 5:30 Sunday evening just outside the crosswalk. The 25 year old mother, and her two year old daughter were not seriously hurt. Her four year old son was thrown from the stroller and is in critical condition. The driver of the car, a man from Lowell, was taken into custody. "He's a 60 year old Cambodian male. We had to call in an officer that spoke his language, he spoke Khmer. So we brought in a Khmer speaking officer to give him his field sobriety test. And after that it was determined that he was under the influence and arrested on the scene," Lt. Crowley said. Police reconstructed the accident in what is the second serious crash in or next to a crosswalk in less than a week. Last Wednesday, 17 year old Michelle Medeiros of Methuen hit 12 year old Kelvin Savanhmixay in a crosswalk. She has been charged with leaving the scene. It's two in a week now, so it's been a long week," Lt. Crowley said. Additional charges against the driver are expected. He is due to be arraigned tomorrow.
